Firefighters Help Watch City Brewing Brew Rettung Eins Kölsch (“Rescue One Kölsch”)

Watch City Brewing Co. announced today it will brew a beer to raise money for a fund assisting the children of Worcester firefighter Jon D. Davies Sr., who died last month while trying to rescue a resident from a burning home.

Aaron Mateychuk, brewmaster at Waltham-based Watch City, will oversee the brewing of Rettung Eins Kölsch (or “Rescue One Kölsch”), along with assistant brewmaster Kelly McKnight and five Worcester firefighters, yet to be named. Kölsch is a crisp, straw-colored, German-style ale that is cold-lagered; indeed a kölsch tastes like a refreshing hybrid of a pale ale and a light lager.

Mateychuk — whose brother, James, is a Worcester firefighter – told me the beer will likely be ready for sale sometime between Feb. 8 and Feb. 15. It will be sold almostly entirely in half-barrels, to bars, pubs, and restaurants, which means it will be available primarily on tap, though a limited number of 22-ounce bottles will be sold at the Watch City brewery.

A portion of the proceeds from sales of Rettung Eins Kölsch will go to the Jon Davies Children’s Fund, which is helping the three sons of the  43-year-old fallen firefighter, who died when the burning building he entered collapsed on him. No one else died in that Dec. 8 fire.

~~~~~
If you or anyone you know has a chance to support this effort, please, try Rettung Eins Kölsch and support a great cause.
Kelly McKnight is a brewer at Watch City Brewing in Waltham, MA. For more information on Kelly, check out our Women in Beer interview with her.
Craft Beer for a Good Cause
Posted By:
Certain beers are legend. Dogfish 120 IPA, Pliny the Younger, and Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout to name a few. When you have the opportunity to try them, you do and whether or not they live up to the hype or not, well, that’s up to each individual imbiber.
A few months ago only 27 cases of CBS were delivered to the entire state of NJ and my local beer store, Cranbury Buy Rite, snagged a few.  Now this was some hard to find stuff and they could have hoarded it for themselves, their friends, or their loyal customers but instead they opted to do something special.  They partnered with a local restaurant, Zinna’s Bistro, and created a Beer Tasting Dinner with a portion of the proceeds going to Elijah’s Promise, a soup kitchen, and much more.
For the 90 or so people who filled the restaurant (it was closed to other customers), we were treated to a nine course tasting of small plates, cooked with and accompanied by beer.  Friends, family and strangers, all beer enthusiasts, shared tables and spent the night together talking about beer, favorites, places to drink, home brewing and more.  We were even treated to a special surprise when half-way through the meal, we paused to enjoy another hard-to-find beer, a bit of Victory’s Dark Intrigue.
My favorites for the evening, the spicy mussels cooked in Allagash’s Dubbel, and Kane’s Head High IPA (accompanied with a little bacon cheeseburger slider). By the way, Kane’s a local NJ brewery, making some really good stuff. If you’re a hop-head and have an opportunity to try some of their brew, you should. Surprises for the evening? Well, never having had a scotch ale (that I can recall), I really enjoyed the Founders Backwoods Bastard and the Dark Intrigue was pretty tasty too.
When raising money for a good cause involves this much fun, who can say no?  I’m looking forward to more beer dinners, hoping this trend continues.
Packinghouse Brewing Co.’s 1st Anniversary
Posted By:
On a scorching hot day in Riverside, California, Packinghouse Brewing Co. held their first anniversary party. Despite the dry and oppressive heat that beat down on Saturday, everyone was in good spirits. Everyone was happy to be there which might have been due to the event donating a portion of the proceeds to Habitat for Humanity (which is an awesome charity) or because the event admission was free and the beer was cold and amazing. As the day went on, it became one of my favorite events I have been to due to the laid-back nature of it all. When it comes down to it all we really want to do is just hang out with good people and drink a few beers, right?
PackingHouse Anniversary PartyThe people that we got to hang out with all day are just plain awesome. The first person I ran into was the famous homebrewer Robert French (@ThreeFrenchs) or “Frenchs” as I called him, and it was so nice to finally meet him in person. It’s a strange and wonderful thing when a twitter/facebook/google+/ untapped friend is tangible and standing in front of you. To all you readers at home I will tell you exactly what I think after meeting Frenchs in person: he’s fantastic. Stephen Johnson, John Holzer and Matt Becker from New Brew Thursday were in attendance with Thomas J. Ham (@ThomasJHam) and posed for some marvelous pictures and swapped beer stories. Don McAllister, brewer and founder of Packinghouse Brewery, was a great host and constantly moving about the party but also was warm and great to talk to. It was also really great to finally meet Jason Harris (@munche) and Erick (@ithor13) and put faces to the twitter conversations.
The beer that was had at PBCo. was damn good and impressive for being only one year old. The anniversary beer was a hoppy, respectable Double Red IPA (8.4% ABV) and exactly was I wanted in the hot weather. Also very different and interesting was the Boysenberry Kona Stout “Mystery Beer” that was unveiled during the event. This beer was 5.5% ABV and surprisingly I really enjoyed the taste and texture of this beer. It doesn’t sound like coffee and berries would go together very well, but this beer was well balanced and had a great aftertaste.
Well done, Packinghouse! I look forward to more innovative and exciting things from you.
Come join the Ladies of Craft Beer at Freshcraft in Denver, Colorado as we clear up our hangovers from the Thursday night Great American Beer Festival session and help support breast cancer awareness.
Women count for 25% beer sales, and yet, the stereotype still stands that beer is a man only drink. Ladies of Craft Beer is an online publication resource started almost 2 years ago in order to shift that way of thinking. We are women, and we love our craft brews! This year, we plan to up the ante with a very special beer (to be announced soon!) and food designed to specifically pair with this beer. The raffle will also be back, so be prepared to have your lucky face on!
Holiday Cheer at Issaquah Brewhouse
Posted By:
Along with brewing up delicious craft beer, Issaquah Brewhouse (acquired by Rogue Ales in 2000) is doing its part to spread holiday cheer and goodwill this year!
Head brewer Steve Luke found a creative use for the brewery’s spent grain this year. In brewing, grain is cracked and boiled to release sugars that are later converted into alcohol. Typically, leftover mash is thrown away, but the spent grain is the perfect fuel for hungry reindeer! Throughout the year, Steve delivered and handfed the grain to the reindeer, benefiting the animals and our environment by reducing waste.
Issaquah Brewhouse is also helping kids in need this holiday season by hosting a Reindeer Engine Toy Drive with Eastside Fire & Rescue on Thursday, December 23, 2010 at 6 PM. Bring a toy donation and Santa will be there to collect the toys and take pictures with brewhouse patrons of all ages.
While you’re enjoying the celebration, try a beer from Issaquah Brewhouse’s signature Frog series, like Menage A Frog Ale, or see if you can buy a pint of Santa’s Private Reserve for the big man himself.
The Issaquah Brewhouse has been open since 1994 and offers brewery tours, free meeting space, and seating that is family and dog friendly. For more information, contact Issaquah Brewhouse at (425) 557-1911.
