Firefighters Help Watch City Brewing Brew Rettung Eins Kölsch (“Rescue One Kölsch”)

Watch City Brewing Co. announced today it will brew a beer to raise money for a fund assisting the children of Worcester firefighter Jon D. Davies Sr., who died last month while trying to rescue a resident from a burning home.

Aaron Mateychuk, brewmaster at Waltham-based Watch City, will oversee the brewing of Rettung Eins Kölsch (or “Rescue One Kölsch”), along with assistant brewmaster Kelly McKnight and five Worcester firefighters, yet to be named. Kölsch is a crisp, straw-colored, German-style ale that is cold-lagered; indeed a kölsch tastes like a refreshing hybrid of a pale ale and a light lager.

Mateychuk — whose brother, James, is a Worcester firefighter – told me the beer will likely be ready for sale sometime between Feb. 8 and Feb. 15. It will be sold almostly entirely in half-barrels, to bars, pubs, and restaurants, which means it will be available primarily on tap, though a limited number of 22-ounce bottles will be sold at the Watch City brewery.

A portion of the proceeds from sales of Rettung Eins Kölsch will go to the Jon Davies Children’s Fund, which is helping the three sons of the  43-year-old fallen firefighter, who died when the burning building he entered collapsed on him. No one else died in that Dec. 8 fire.

~~~~~
If you or anyone you know has a chance to support this effort, please, try Rettung Eins Kölsch and support a great cause.
Kelly McKnight is a brewer at Watch City Brewing in Waltham, MA. For more information on Kelly, check out our Women in Beer interview with her.
Craft Beer for a Good Cause
Posted By:
Certain beers are legend. Dogfish 120 IPA, Pliny the Younger, and Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout to name a few. When you have the opportunity to try them, you do and whether or not they live up to the hype or not, well, that’s up to each individual imbiber.
A few months ago only 27 cases of CBS were delivered to the entire state of NJ and my local beer store, Cranbury Buy Rite, snagged a few.  Now this was some hard to find stuff and they could have hoarded it for themselves, their friends, or their loyal customers but instead they opted to do something special.  They partnered with a local restaurant, Zinna’s Bistro, and created a Beer Tasting Dinner with a portion of the proceeds going to Elijah’s Promise, a soup kitchen, and much more.
For the 90 or so people who filled the restaurant (it was closed to other customers), we were treated to a nine course tasting of small plates, cooked with and accompanied by beer.  Friends, family and strangers, all beer enthusiasts, shared tables and spent the night together talking about beer, favorites, places to drink, home brewing and more.  We were even treated to a special surprise when half-way through the meal, we paused to enjoy another hard-to-find beer, a bit of Victory’s Dark Intrigue.
My favorites for the evening, the spicy mussels cooked in Allagash’s Dubbel, and Kane’s Head High IPA (accompanied with a little bacon cheeseburger slider). By the way, Kane’s a local NJ brewery, making some really good stuff. If you’re a hop-head and have an opportunity to try some of their brew, you should. Surprises for the evening? Well, never having had a scotch ale (that I can recall), I really enjoyed the Founders Backwoods Bastard and the Dark Intrigue was pretty tasty too.
When raising money for a good cause involves this much fun, who can say no?  I’m looking forward to more beer dinners, hoping this trend continues.
Beer for Boobs is Over 80% sold: Updated Official Attendee List
Posted By:
Come join the Ladies of Craft Beer at Freshcraft in Denver, Colorado as we clear up our hangovers from the Thursday night Great American Beer Festival session and help support breast cancer awareness.
Women count for 25% beer sales, and yet, the stereotype still stands that beer is a man only drink. Ladies of Craft Beer is an online publication resource started almost 2 years ago in order to shift that way of thinking. We are women, and we love our craft brews! While all of our contributors and staff are women, we are proud to say that we have a large following of men as well, because, well, who doesn’t love a woman that loves beer? (Plus- we love you guys and we want to be able to meet you and enjoy some brew together!)
Last year, over 100 beer lovers (male and female) gathered at Freshcraft on Friday morning to enjoy delicious food and craft beer, proceeds of which were donated to the National Breast Cancer foundation. This year, we plan to up the ante with a very special beer (to be announced soon!) and food designed to specifically pair with this beer. The raffle will also be back, so be prepared to have your lucky face on!
Ticket prices include access to buffet style brunch and discounted draft beer and bottles. 100% of the proceeds from the discounted beer will also go towards breast cancer charities. Tickets should be printed out and brought to the door, or can also be brought via mobile device. Visit the event page at Brown Paper Tickets to get your ticket today before we’re sold out!
UPDATES:
We hope that you will join us for this morning of food, drink, fun and prizes! Cheers!
Stay tuned on here or follow us on Twitter (@LadiesOCB) for more information and updates about the brunch as we get closer to the event date.
Visit Freshcraft’s website for more information on the venue or find Freshcraft on Twitter at @FreshcraftFood.
